Good Parking Spaces

about those wheelchair accessible parking spots............?

i was told by my code enforcment friend that you may only use the stalls if the person requiring the placard actually exits the vehicle. in other words, i may not use the stall with a placard if my father (who needs it) will be staying in the car. of course it makes sense to me and i would never do that. i pointed it out to a friend in the parking lot yesterday. she became huffy as if i were trying to deride her. i was hoping to save her the ticket. she said since her boy was in the pharmacy getting her medicine, he may park in the stall and she shall wait in the car. meanwhile, an elderly couple was struggling with the wife's walker across the lot. they had accessible plates, but the stalls (4) were full. one car had no plates or placard. i'm sorry i wasn't very clear. she did indeed posess a placard, but she was only waiting in the car. if she rides along while her son does errands, they can use the disabled spots. also, i forgot to add my question, is there a law that prohibits this? i cannot find it and the ada site is so involved and distracting (like my three year old here)

  1. As this isn't a question I can only answer with an affirmative. I, too, have a father in a wheelchair (though he drives with a hand-controled device). But I enjoy keying cars that park in the spots without some form of placard.
  2. Being handicapp and in need of that card here is my feelings. I use the parking spot when I need to get out. If I am with a friend who is going in for me I don't. The whole idea of handicapp parking is for the handicapp to ease their access to buildings. Not a spot to make the non-handicapp a quick trip in. I do call the police when I don't see a handicapp tag on the car or window. So tell your huffy friend work of some of that steam and park at the farthest from the entrance.
  3. Try this, how 'bout she go inside to retrieve her medication and her son stay in the car. That way he can move the car if need be.
  4. Your code enforcement friend is correct, not only is it illegal, but it's morally wrong too. I don't know where you live, but here in NM they are trying to get a law passed which makes it a $150.00 fine for a first offense, and then 250 for a second, and $500 after that, plus they will put a "boot" on the vehicle so it can't be moved until the fine is paid.
  5. You should ask the woman who spent the night in jail in Nashville, TN for auto theft, assault and parking in a handicapped space without authorization. I called the police on the woman when she refused to move and I will do it again anytime I find such inconsiderate people.
  6. I am handicapped and nothing pisses me off more than when I go to spurs game and every single handicapped spot is taken and I know without a doubt that some peopel are cheaters. And I hate when fat ladies come to my school and use MY HANDICAPPED SPOT as a pick up and drop off lane! They just come and park right in the middle of the two closest lanes and wait for their kid. I sit there with my CRUTCHES and glare at them while I wait for my mom to pick me up. Sometimes they move. Sometimes they don't.
